item: car tire seat
economic life: 10 years
material: rubber, nylon, metal, soot, resin, clay and chemicals
economic end point: recycling
downcycling factor: medium
original: car tire
Basically, the car tire is a rubber ring with air in it around the wheel of a car. Natural rubber was discovered around 1600 BC. The use of latex as a basis for solid rubber tires took place much later, namely from 1867.
From 1920, natural rubber and synthetic rubber (from petroleum) were combined, because natural rubber was a scarce product. Synthetic rubber is more resistant to heat, oil and gasoline. The pneumatic car tire, designed by the brothers André and Eduard Michelin, was used from 1895 and became increasingly popular due to the better comfort compared to the solid car tyre.
tire life
No matter how much you drive, after 10 years a tire will run out. The chemical composition is then affected. Car tires also wear out when they are not in use. They become deformed and the anti-UV oxidation chemicals are not evenly distributed due to standing still, causing dry spots that lead to cracks.
Particulate matter is released into the air during the wear of car tires. It is one of the biggest causes of pollution by microplastics.
legal requirements
Since 2004, the recycling of car tires has been a legal requirement. Producers, garage companies and the recycling center take in car tyres. They then proceed to the processor, where rubber, metal and nylon are separated. The rubber is granulated and used as a new raw material for, for example, playground tiles, artificial grass fields and asphalt.
current: car tire lounge chair
Car tires are tough and flexible at the same time and strong due to the steel and nylon threads that are intertwined with the rubber. This combination offers many possibilities for new shapes and functions, such as the tire seat.
Five car tires were used for this chair, which are attached to each other with relatively simple connections. The flexibility of the car tires makes this chair comfortable and a popular
lounge chair for Milgro residents to catch up with each other or make a call.

Furnishing the office with end-of-use materials is in line with Milgro's vision that waste is a resource that has lost its way.
As a connector between disposers and recipients of used raw materials, Milgro applies this vision in practice. With technology, methodology and a proven approach, Milgro enables companies to successfully implement the raw materials transition. The result is profitable sustainability: Earth & Earn together.
