A day in the life of... Anne van Steenoven: Circular Economy Officer at Milgro

Ambitious professionals work at Milgro who work on our sustainable mission every day. What does it mean to work for a purpose organization? And how does this mission find its way into everyday life? We asked several colleagues to describe a day at Milgro.

Today it is Anne van Steenoven's turn. She is Circular Economy Officer (CEO) at Milgro and uses her expertise to guide our clients, whom we call discarders, in the transition to a new economy through sustainable resource management.

Start of the day

Good morning!!! This morning my alarm went off at 7:00 am. I had already prepared my breakfast and lunch yesterday, so I can now get out the door quickly. On Tuesdays it is a team day and we are all in the office. I travel by train to Rotterdam and grab an OV bike from the station to get to the office. That way I have had some exercise for the day right away.

Teammeeting

Upon my arrival at the office, I first have a cup of tea and chat with colleagues about our experiences from last weekend. Then we proceed to our team meeting, where we discuss the figures from the past month. We also have a weekly intervision moment, where one of us presents a case study from one of his or her accounts. By reflecting together on ways to serve our client even better, you are encouraged to look critically at your own accounts. What could be done better? How can I respond to the needs of a company's various contacts? How can we reduce waste of resources at our customers? These are issues we work on every day.

Client visit

During the lunch break, we often take a walk with some colleagues through the picturesque village of Overschie, a pleasant break from the working day. After this walk, a visit to a customer is scheduled. We go to a company near our office that produces sauces and soups. Once in a while we visit to discuss the current situation. How is our service going? Is there a way to make the process of separating waste in the factory easier? Can we separate waste even more efficiently so that a greater proportion can be recycled? And what about the data from the scales we use to make waste measurable? These questions are important to continuously improve our cooperation.

Contributing to a more sustainable future

To answer these questions, we make sure we have a good understanding of a company's processes and developments. In doing so, we make use of a dashboard in which all of our clients' data is collected. Based on this data, we strive for continuous improvement so that our customers can not only save money, but also reduce their carbon footprint.

The improvement projects appeal to me enormously and are one of the reasons why I started working at Milgro six months ago. It gives me great satisfaction to be able to contribute concretely to better recycling and reducing waste. I help food companies with concrete solutions for their waste management and look together with them how we can prevent the waste of valuable raw materials. By helping our customers with this in the best possible way, I contribute every day to a more sustainable future.
