What is circularity?

Circularity is about the use of raw materials, not consumption. Materials stay in circulation as long as possible through reuse, repair and recycling. The result: less waste, less waste and more value.

Why is circularity important?

Our economy consumes far more raw materials than the earth can replenish annually. This leads to scarcity, loss of valuable materials and high CO2 emissions. Circularity offers a solution: through smarter design, production and processing, we prevent waste and make our economy more resilient. More and more laws and regulations are actively promoting this.

In addition, circularity offers opportunities for new business models. Reusing materials, offering products as a service and extending life cycles create economic value. According to research by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a circular economy could generate hundreds of billions of euros for Europe by 2030.

Understanding circularity: how far are we?

How far are Dutch and Belgian companies actually with circularity? And where are the greatest opportunities for improvement?

Milgro investigated this and the results are striking: circularity is often on the agenda, but implementation lags behind. Many companies lack grip on their material flows or do not know where to start.

The good news: there is plenty of potential. With targeted insights and practical tools, organizations can take quick steps.

Getting started!

The degree of circularity directly determines the date of Earth Overshoot Day. The better we handle resources, the later that date falls. And that is exactly where we want to go: an economy in which we do not consume more than the earth can handle.

Milgro helps organizations set up their processes in a circular way: from waste separation to chain collaboration and from product design to performance monitoring.
