WMD is committed to a smooth and sustainable waste management process, together with Milgro

The Drenthe drinking water company WMD already knew what waste streams existed within the organization, and also that it pays to separate waste. But the precise insight, that was missing. That is now available. It is the first result of the cooperation between the Drenthe company and Milgro. Joop van der Aa is facilities consultant and reaps the benefits. "It saves a mountain of administration." And there is more.

For example, before the cooperation with Milgro, WMD had six different waste processing services. "We received invoices from those, overviews with waste streams and all kinds of other forms of communication. That was quite complex. And laborious," admits Van der Aa, who as facilities consultant is responsible for smooth waste processing.

Cooperation with Milgro

Exactly that was one of the important reasons to start working with Milgro from the beginning of last year. The advantage, finds Van der Aa: "Then we keep everything in one hand. This not only saves in the administrative processing, it should ultimately also yield environmental benefits." Indeed, through insight, it will be possible to manage the reduction of waste.

Gradual transition

The transition from various suppliers to Milgro was gradual. First Milgro took charge of waste processing at the office locations, then open and closed disposal containers, then confidential paper and waste processing at project locations. "I hear good noises from the project sites, so we are satisfied with our cooperation with Milgro so far."

Smooth waste handling process

The swapping of containers and providers must be done carefully, Joop van der Aa believes. "You don't want a container from an old supplier to be picked up somewhere and no new one is put in its place," argues WMD's facilities consultant. "Such a transition listens closely. My starting point is that the waste management process runs smoothly."

The first annual review

Recently, Joop van der Aa, his sustainability colleagues and Milgro discussed the first total overview that Milgro had compiled for WMD, taken over an entire year. A clear overview containing all waste streams, tonnages and environmental impact. Because of Van der Aa's profession, his eye is almost automatically drawn to the price of services, at the bottom of the line. "Yes, we are slightly less advantageous in terms of costs," he concludes. "Logical too, we engaged Milgro, basically a link between us and the processors."

Freeing up time

On the other hand, Van der Aa outlines where he saves costs. And will save. Think of the time the financial administration saves in handling. Think of the number of transport movements that decrease because only full containers are picked up and no longer half-empty ones. And think of the time Joop van der Aa himself frees up. It enables him to regularly walk around the branches and pull open a waste container here and there: to check whether waste is being separated properly and cleanly. See, that's where Joop and his colleagues take a nice step toward the most important saving: sustainable waste management.
