MATIS and the waste register: the difference at a glance

Flemish waste policy has two systems for registering and monitoring waste streams: the Waste Register and MATIS. These terms are often used interchangeably, which can be confusing. Therefore, in this blog we list the differences and similarities.

Waste register: mandatory for companies that produce waste

For organizations that want to get rid of their waste, the Waste Register is applicable. This register is a mandatory business administration in which companies keep track of their waste streams. The registration is done through a Web-based registry and is part of the Belgian policy to reduce the impact of waste.

Companies are required to document their waste streams so that this data can be used for enforcement and transparency within waste management. This contributes to efficient processing and prevents waste of raw materials and energy.

MATIS: mandatory for waste collectors and processors

In addition to the Waste Register, OVAM has developed the Materials Information System (MATIS). This digital platform specifically targets waste collectors and processors. They are required to report waste streams through MATIS, providing a detailed overview of the circulation of waste within Flanders.
MATIS was developed to gain better insight into waste management and allows OVAM to identify trends and bottlenecks. This can accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

The future: integration of both systems

At present, MATIS and the Waste Register function side by side. The ambition is to integrate both systems into one central platform in the future. This would help companies reduce administrative burdens and work more efficiently.

For now, it may mean that companies have to register their waste streams in both systems. This creates extra work, but also more transparency and control over waste management.
