item: wind turbine
economic life: 20 years
material: reinforced plastic (composite)
economic end point: incinerator
downcycling factor: high
original: wind turbine
It is almost impossible to imagine life without them on the Dutch horizon: windmills. The number of wind turbines has increased significantly in recent years. This is partly due to the increased efficiency in the generation of wind energy.
wind turbine lifespan
Modern wind turbine blades have lengths of up to 85 meters and an economic life of approximately 20 years. Then they must be replaced. Hundreds of magazines therefore retire in the Netherlands every year.
in the incinerator or grounded
Wind turbine blades are made of fiberglass or carbon fiber reinforced plastic. This so-called composite is as strong as steel, but also very light. Useful for a long life but almost impossible to recycle.
Waste sheets often end up in the garbage dump or in the incinerator. There are now new forms of sustainable 'cleaning up' of old turbine blades, such as grinding and pressing into floor tiles, but the downcycling factor remains high.
current: conference table
At Milgro we regularly meet at a special table. This is in fact produced from the tip of an old wind turbine blade. The undercarriage is also partly made from parts of the turbine. Due to this 'functional shift' the material starts a new life. Meetings and flex workers like to sit at the huge table.

Furnishing the office with end-of-use materials is in line with Milgro's vision that waste is a resource that has lost its way.
As a connector between disposers and recipients of used raw materials, Milgro applies this vision in practice. With technology, methodology and a proven approach, Milgro enables companies to successfully implement the raw materials transition. The result is profitable sustainability: Earth & Earn together.
