Together with a logistics partner, we took on the challenge of understanding the residual waste generated and how it is disposed of. In conclusion, six different Zero Waste Weeks at individual locations showed a combined residual waste volume savings potential of as much as 86%, and there was even 1 location that could go to a separation rate of 93% with perfect separation with an associated CO₂-savingspotential of as much as 43%!

On the shop floor at one of our partners, a large amount of straps-the plastic strapping bands made of polypropylene (PP) or polyester (PET)-that are released when unpacking goods in the logistics sector were generated.

Previously, these regularly got mixed up with other packaging waste, such as plastic films. Because both materials are thin and flexible, sorting machines have trouble distinguishing them from one another. The result: The straps ended up in residual waste.

One of our partners in the construction industry was in the midst of preparations for a major remodel. The original plan was to remove and replace existing cable trays-the metal channels in which cables for power and data run.

Working with Milgro, a few simple but targeted questions were asked: are the cable trays still in good condition? Are they technically obsolete? Or can they be reused without loss of quality?

Processing the wood stream into biomass

At one of the production sites of Isobouw, producer of insulation solutions, a large volume of wood was disposed of as residual waste for many years. The reason: the wood was contaminated with EPS (polystyrene foam), which adhered to the wood during production and is difficult to separate. As a result, the material disrupted the recycling process and reuse was not possible.

The Drenthe drinking water company WMD already knew what waste streams existed within the organization, and also that it pays to separate waste. But the precise insight, that was missing. That is now available. It is the first result of the cooperation between the Drenthe company and Milgro. Joop van der Aa is facilities consultant and reaps the benefits. "It saves a mountain of administration." And there is more.

For example, before the cooperation with Milgro, WMD had six different waste processing services. "We received invoices from those, overviews with waste streams and all kinds of other forms of communication. That was quite complex. And laborious," admits Van der Aa, who as facilities consultant is responsible for smooth waste processing.

WasteLab at Bru Textiles (BE)

In August 2024, Bru Textiles, a leading player in the textile sector, launched a partnership with Milgro. The goal: to no longer see waste as a residual product, but as a raw material. Part of this collaboration was the WasteLab, an interactive workshop to analyze waste streams, find points of improvement for waste separation and make employees aware of how choices and behavior directly contribute to a circular economy.

Optimization of film processing via chemical recycling

Aviko Proven, a leading player in the potato processing industry, faced the challenge of disposing of plastic films in a sustainable manner. Traditional waste disposal led to incineration of the foils, which was not in line with the organization's sustainability goals. Together with Milgro, Aviko Proven set out to find an environmentally friendly solution for processing foils.

Milgro and an innovative German paper producer take a step towards circular paper usage

Director Bernd Scholbrock of the German paper manufacturer Schoellershammer, Milgro's new collaboration partner, is not short on hard numbers. He knows exactly how his company near Aachen is performing. The company's CO2 footprint is now only 25% of what it was in 1993. And the factory can recycle paper at least 25 times. Through this new collaboration, Milgro's clients also benefit from these advancements.

Even more figures from Scholbrock: "We have a CO₂ footprint in scopes 1, 2, and 3 that is 55% of the industry average in the paper sector. We're satisfied with that, although we naturally want more." For several years now, Scholbrock has been producing more sustainably with his company. And not without reason.
